"The Twist" by Chubby Checker has not died yet. This song was first introduced in the year of 1960. Chubby did not think this was going to be such a hit but it was number one in 1960 and 1962. This song is very interesting to the history of rock 'n' roll because this was one of the first songs in which people started dancing unique moves of rock 'n' roll. This song was able to bring all generations together and it let them admit that they all truly liked rock 'n' roll. After 50 years this is still true. Furthermore, many musicians used and some still use the Chubby Checker's moves. For example, Michael Jackson and Britney Spears. "The twist" also inspired other moves such as, The Fly, The Funky Chicken, the Hucklebuck, the Locomotion, the Pony among many more.
This song was a very happy song;
"Take me by my little hand and go like this
Eo-oh twist baby baby twist
Oooh-yeah just like this."
Just by reading these lyrics without listening to the beat one could tell this is a song that involves a lot of movement.
"My daddy is sleepin' and mama ain't around
Yeah daddy is sleepin' and mama ain't
We're ganna twisty twisty twisty."
When I read these lyrics I remembered that adults were scared of rock 'n' roll and it made sense for the first time. They talked about things that songs from before never talked about. These song wasn't too out there but it still alarmed parents.

Lyrics Analysis
"Hey Jude" is a song by The Beatles. This song became the most successful song that they ever released. It sold more than 10 million copies in the Unites States. When I first heard this song I fell in love with it. Out of all the songs we have listened to in class, this one was the ones that caught my attention the most. After listening to the song a few times I realized that the message was a little unclear which is why I wanted to analyze this song. After making a little research, I learned that this song was written to Julian. Julian is Cynthia's and John's son. His parents were going through a divorce. Mc Cartney wanted to give a message to Julian through this song but Julian didn't know this until 19 years later. Now the lyrics make much more sense.
"And anytime you feel the pain, hey jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders"
This basically means to let everything out, to not stay with it inside. When one keeps everything inside the pain only grows and grows.
"For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder"
This part means that John is cold but that Julian knows that and he shouldn't let that affect him.
Furthermore, I think it is really interesting how different people took the song in different ways. For example, John thought the song was for him because of the following part "go out and get her". I think it is even more interesting that Julian didn't realize the song was written for him. All in all, the song was trying to make Julian feel. In my opinion they should have told him since the beginning and not waiting 19 years.

Muse Workshop
I attended the Loan Consolidation Workshop on Tuesday, December 1st, 2010. In this workshop they talked about how to pay loans one has taken out. In my opinion this workshop was very useful because I got a lot of information that could be helpful in my future. It is much better to take all of your loans from one lender. This is better because like this you only have to pay one person and not 10 different ones. I also learned that after obtaining your first degree you will have to pay tax fees even if attending grad school. The process of obtaining a consolidation loan is the following:
verify all loans amounts and current holders.
There are many ways in which one could repay loans. For example, standard repayment(fixed amount form 10-30 years), Graduated Repayments(these start out low but then increase every 2 years up to 30 years), Extended repayments(you need at least to have a loan of $30k and like this will get 25 years to pay back), and Income Contingent Repayment Plan (ICR)(this is based on income and family size). Attending this workshop helped me get a better idea of how loans look like. I now know that it is much better to take loans from one lender only. Most importantly one has to look at the taxes one has to pay for every loan.

Fever Chapter #7
While reading this chapter I started to realize that Rock 'n' Roll has influenced a lot of people. Rock 'n' Roll made whites and blacks equal and in this chapter we learn about inspiration. Many Rock 'n' Roll singers have inspired fans to stand up for themselves. In chapter 7, the story of Tina Turner is shared to us. Tina Turner was a singer that had a husband that would abuse her. When she decided to leave him and move on, she started to sing songs that talked about his personal story. This is wonderful because fans are followers; therefore fans took this as an example and got inspired to leave their abusive husbands. It shocking how for 6 years TIna Turner was the only woman to sing songs that influenced others. After 6 years Barr got inspired by Tina's actions and started to to support subjects like teen sex and parental ambivalence.
Fever Chapter #6
While reading this chapter, Bruce Springsteen caught my attention. I think it is really interesting that he is the only American rock star that gets compared to Elvis. Springsteen got inspired by many people such as, Presley to Phil Spector, girl groups to Dylan, R&B covers to frat rock. In addition, his concerts were four and half hours long. The part that was REALLY interesting to me was that Springsteen would shuffle his songs often. This means that he would change the tone of each song to make it have a different emotional tone. This helped not get the fans bored of listening to the same songs every night. Last but not least, I would like to talk about how Springsteen was able to gain fans by singing romantic songs. Women from that era and even from today's society love music that say sweet things and not music that puts them down(make them feel less powerful) like the music Dylan would sing.
MOVIE SOUNDTRACK: "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian"
1. Bob Marley: Is This Love
This song goes perfectly with the theme of Love. In the story, Junior the main character falls in love with Penelope. Penelope is a rich white girl that attends the same school Junior decided to move to. He decided to go to that school to obtain a better education and a better future. At the beginning Junior saw Penelope as an impossible dream but as they got to now each other, they began to like each other and Junior decided to take her to the Winter Formal.
(pg 122)
"Penelope and I were so happy to be alive, and so happy alive TOGETHER, even if we were only a semi-hot item and we danced every single dance.
Nineteen dances; nineteen songs.
Twelve fast songs; seven slow ones
Eleven country hits; five rock songs; three hip-hop tunes.
It was the best night of my life.
Of course, I was a sweaty mess inside that hot polyester suit.
But it didn't matter. Penelope thought I was beautiful and so i felt beautiful."
I picture this scene as the following,
Penelope and Junior dancing to different songs. . . but instead of us listening to the music they are dancing to, we would listen to this song.
This songs goes with the theme of love because Junior is in love with Penelope.
2. Queen: We Will Rock You
This songs fits in with the theme of Patriotism. Junior decided to move schools like mentioned previously. When he moved he got really interested in basketball. He became part of his new school's basketball team and played against his old friends. He didn't care about what his old teammates thought about him. His goal was to win and he wanted to defeat his best friends Rowdy. All the people from his old school and his town hated Junior for "trading" them. Junior's team and him wanted to win the game no matter what.
(pg. 144)
"If these dang Indians had been organized when I came to school here, maybe I would have more reasons to stay.
That thought made me laugh.
So I laughed.
And my laughter was the only sound in the gym.
And then I noticed that the only Indian who hadn't turned his back on me was Rowdy. He was standing on the other court. He passed a basketball around his back, around his back, around his back, like a clock. And he glared at me.
He wanted to play.
He didn't want to turn his back on me.
He wanted to kill me, face-to-face.
That made me laugh some more.
And then Coach started laughing with me.
And so did my teammates.
And we kept laughing as we walked into the locker room to get ready for the game."
I picture this scene as the following,
As Junior's new team walks into the gym, the gym comes to a complete silence.
I picture the team walking in the middle of the huge gym with all eyes on them. As the walk this song plays on the back.
This song goes with this scene because Junior as well as his teammates want to really win this game.
3. Johnny Cash- Hurt
This song goes perfectly the theme of death. Junior had to go through the pain of losing many of his loved ones. He first had to go through the pain of losing his grandmother. Junior's grandmother was the closest person Junior had. He would look up to her and look for her when he had problems. After this big loss he had to go through it again when his sister died.
I picture this scene as the following,
(pg. 201)
"Arnold, I'm sorry." she said.
"But I just got a phone call from your mother.
It's your sister. She's passed away."
"What do you mean?"I asked.
I knew what she meant, but I wanted her to say something else.
"Your sister is gone," Miss Warren said. . . . . .
"No," Miss Warren said. "Your sister, she's dead."
Right after those words, this songs plays.
As the song plays you could see Junior with a shock face.
This song goes this theme because people died and made Junior really really sad.

Music List #4
1) Bruno Mars- A lot of his songs talk about girls and love. His songs could make girls feel better because of the lyrics. It is pretty relaxing.
2) Ne-yo- He talks about love and love problems in a lot of his songs.
3) Usher- He just makes me relax just by listening to his lyrics.
4) Aventura- This is a spanish band. I love this band I now almost all of their songs. They also talk about love and they have made a lot of couples get back together. When I am stressed out I listen to them and they just help me relax.
5) Drake- I like him because sometimes I can't really understand what he says so I just listen to the beat and I don't think for a little. Sometimes it is good not to think a lot because this helps our brains rest. =]

Party with a plan (Workshop #2)
Thursday October 28, 2010 from 1:30 - 3:00pm.
This workshop was actually interesting I learned many things that I didn't even know existed. For example, I learned about a drink called "Four Loko". This drink has about 5-6 beers and about 12oz of caffeine inside them. Many college students have gotten hospitalized as a result of drinking a "Four Loko". It was shocking to discover that every year as a result of drinking an average of 1,700 college students die and 97,000 are sexual assaulted (9 out of 10 victims are women).
Things that are useful to know:
1). It is good to drink but to certain extents. One could get alcohol poison and die because of it.
2). People who weigh less and are short have higher chances of getting intoxicated faster.
3). Eating before drinking reduces 40% of intoxication.
4). DO NOT LET GO OF YOUR DRINKS AT ANYTIME
*if you do then get a new one.
5). BAC levels in California
*.45+ death, .01 .05 relaxed, .16 - .30 very drunk.
*DUI cost = 11,000
6). Alcohol Poison
*blood from hands and feet go to the inter organs which causes coldness.
7). What to do if someone is acting abnormal ?
*check for slow or irregular breathing
*do not leave this person alone
*call 911

Fever Chapter #5
This chapter was a little hard to understand but while reading it I found it really interesting reading about Joni Mitchell. Joni Mitchell was a woman that had her own style. She never tried to copy any of the superstars such as Tina. The book identifies her as a new kind of woman. It is interesting because even though she was different than most the singers that had hits during this period; she was able to shine with her unique style. It is mentioned that Mitchell's songs were like a puzzle. Her thoughts of men were never fully defined on her songs. She wrote some her songs based on her relationships! She had all kinds of songs. For example, some of her songs were short and curt while others were complicated. Joni Mitchell's career was sealed by "You Turn Me On", one of her first hit songs.

Interview a Senior
One of the seniors I interviewed was Ginger. Ginger is in my Mexican American Class. She mentioned that college was basically the opposite of what she thought it would be like. She said that before coming into college she thought that college was all about partying and meeting crazy people. Moreover, she thought that college was going to be harder than high school. She was surprised to find out that college was easier for her than high school. She said that college has made her mature in many ways thanks to the people she has met. Ginger came into SJSU with an undeclared major. After a while she decided to go into Criminal Justice and this has never change. She mentioned that she wish she paid more attention to her classes instead of living the fun college experience. She leaned that focusing, going to class, and putting in the effort will take you farther. She would advise the freshman to stay focus and to not listen to their peers.
The second senior I interviewed was Jose. Jose is also in my Mexican American Studies class. He said that college was just how he thought it would be. He said he always thought college was not the time to make the wrong decisions, so he stayed focus at all times. His major did not change. He said he always knew what he wanted since the beginning. He mentioned that something different he would do would be to take classes over the summer. This way he would have taken less years to graduate. He would advise the freshman to stay focus and to take classes over the summer. He also wants to tell the freshman to party after they are done with their school work and to study for their exams.

"All Shook Up" Chapter 6
I was surprised to discover that most of the famous artists from the era of the 50's ended mad. I came to a conclusion that maybe parents from this era were right when they didn't let their children listen to rock 'n' roll. For example, Jerry Lee Lewis married a thirteen year old which made his career come to an end. In the real world it is nonsense to marry a child. Jerry Lee Lewis married a little girl who still needed to become an adult before getting married. This meant that Lewis could have gotten with any other girl which is why the parents were scared for their children. Furthermore, Chuck Berry was put in jail for the period of three years for violating the Mann Act. Chuck Berry brought a fourteen year old to the United States from Mexico. This girl worked at a night club and as a prostitute at night. It is a little unfair because Chuck Berry got a chance to become famous once after his bad actions while Jerry Lee Lewis lost his career. On the other hand rock 'n' roll come to an end when radio stations started playing more mellow songs. Lastly I think that even if rock 'n' roll ended a lot of artist from the 60's covered a lot of their music.

Fever Chapter #4
While reading this chapter I thought it was really interesting that Motown was a corporation formed by mainly black people and it had such a success. I was surprised that not long after segregation was occurring in the United States many people were now listening to blacks sing. It was also surprising to learn that females were now playing an essential role in the music industry. Bands such as Martha and the Vandellas and Diana Ross and the Supremes were now producing number one hits. I was happy when I read a part that talked about that black and white people where admiring each other in terms of music. Men and women were seeing as equal and most importantly segregation was being put aside. People were now enjoying the music regardless of who was behind the microphone.

Music Memories #2
1. What did you listen to as teenagers?
ACDC, Journey, Steve Smith, Foreigner, Def Leppard, Lynyrd
2. What concerts did you attend?
well, I went to see the Grateful Dead a whole bunch of times. Also Motley Crue once, and Prince but I didn't go to many big concerts because I REALLY hate crowds.
3. Have your taste changed over time?
not really, I've always liked a variety of music, so.. as I hear new music I do ass a lot to what I listen to, but still listen to the old stuff too. . So I suppose it's gotten broader, but I still like what I've always like
4. Favorite bands then and now?
favorite then-
Journey, Santana
favorite now-
she loves Cure, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Pink and Lady Gaga and Eminem
It depends on the mood she is in she said.
My taste of music has not completely changed over time. I enjoy listening to different styles and enjoy listening to new songs that come out. I, just like the person I interviewed just continue to add songs to my playlist. My favorite songs never get old not even if I get new songs. I also agree that the music I listen to really depends on the mood I am in. If I feel sick I hate listening to Pitbull and artist on the same style but when I am in a good mood I love listening to this music. As time goes by we listen to new artists and start to like their music. I found it interesting how we both listen to Lady Gaga. This demonstrates that she is open to listen to new music. I am in the same position because Lady Gaga is a new artist but she is now one of my favorites as well. In my opinion people never really forget about the music they listened to as teenagers. It is true that at times many people might stop listening to music they listened to as teenagers but that doesn't mean anything. For example, my parents listen to music that comes out in the radio which means that they listen to music that is popular in today's era. When my parents listen to old music(music that was popular when they were teenagers) they start singing and dancing and say "this is good music". This proves that people might listen to new music but they never forget about the music from before.

Angela's Music List #3
SONGS I HATE!!!!
1. "Alejandro" by Lady Gaga
I don't like this song because I think the lyrics are annoying. She repeats the name a lot and I don't see the point of her repeating the name that many times.
2. "Single" by Lil Wayne
I don't like this song because I hate slow songs and I sometimes don't like rap. My friend would listen to this song a lot and it was hard for me not to get mad.
3. "Beautiful Monster" by Ne-Yo
I don't like this song because it brings me back bad memories.
4. "Die for Metal" by Manowar
I dislike this song because I don't like metal. The way they sing scares me. They yell and act weird.
5. "1 Love" by E-40
I hate this song because I don't like the way they rap in that song. I am not a big fan of rap and in this song I just don't feel it. NOT MY TYPE

"Fever" Chapter #2 and #3
While reading these two chapters I thought it was really interesting how females became famous but were controlled by males. It is mention that men controlled the song choices, production, arrangements, and managements. I think that some men were taking advantage of this situation. I think that women should have had the right to choose their own music and make their own arrangements. On the other hand there were males who did help females in a good way. I thought girls who were singing during this time were really brave. They did not let stereotypes define them. They found a way to overcome the stereotypes. Furthermore I also thought it was really interesting how Tina was compared to Elvis. The book mentions that she sang good and that it was really hard for a her and Elvis to find songs because their talent was too big. She got the attention of producers and she ripped through gender.

"All Shook Up" Chapter #4 and 5
While reading these two chapters I think I was able to understand parents' fears a little more. Their children were acting way different than how parents acted when they were once teenagers. I thought it was really interesting how "teenager" was not a word in the English dictionary until the 50's. I thought this word was just a word like "adults" used for a long period of time. In my opinion the change in teenagers from this era was because of the technology and because the music had a dramatic change. All this was new for the teenagers and they wanted to explore new things. Furthermore I was surprised when I read that teenagers who listen to rock and roll were the ones getting the worse grades. On the other hand we had the teenagers that listened to classical music and pop were the ones doing better in school. I feel that rock and roll was not a bad influence it was just a different way for teenagers to have fun. The more parents went against this the more the teenagers wanted to listen to it.

Angela's TIP #3
A third tip on how to succeed in college is to ask for help when need it. If something is unclear to you the right thing to do is to ask the professor during the lesson. One should not be afraid because there is a high chance that you are not the only person with that particular question. On the other hand there are other ways that you could receive help from. For example, a lot of classes have mentors in them. They could be good people to ask questions to. You could also attend the professors' office hours or get a tutor.
Stress Workshop ;)
Attending this particular workshop helped me a lot because I am a person that stresses out a lot. I learned a lot of new ways to help me prevent stress. I never really thought about how one could loose relationships in result of stressing out. After this workshop I am going to change the way I do things. For example, I am going to start playing my days. This will help me avoid having tons of homework in just one night. I always leave things for last minute and that is what causes me to get headaches and the urge to cry. I am also going to start eating more and start sleeping more as well. These are some ways that could help me prevent from stressing out. Stressing out is one of the major problems I face today in life. This is why I decided to attend this particular workshop. I was really surprised when I found out that I currently do things that help me reduce stress. For example, I take warm showers and I get massages.

"All Shook Up" Chapter #3 and "Fever" Chapter #1
As I was reading "All Shook Up" I thought it was really interesting how people saw rock and roll as something that was making teenagers attractive to each other. I was thinking that parents were making their children act that way. They would get paranoid about the music and would tell their children not to listen to it. They even had some song removed from the market because of the lyrics. It is like telling a little kid not to do something the more you tell them the more they want to do it. I always thought it was weird how for the T.V show American Bandstand had the kids dress in a certain way and how they couldn't wear shorts. I think that people from before crossed the line. I mean it is only normal for two people to be attractive to each other. Dick Clark fired a person when he told the girl he liked what he felt. Furthermore in the book "Fever" I found it interesting how people from the past have shaped a lot of people today. They have also creating change and people follow their foot prints.

1. "Say Goodbye" by Chris Brown
I like this song because it reminds me of when I was in high school. It brings me back memories.
2. "Billionaire" by Bruno Mars
When I hear this song it reminds me of my high school friends. Since my school had an open campus for seniors we would always go out during lunch and on the way to places we would all sing this song.
3. "Nothing on you" by B.O.B
I like this song because I love what it says. I think that today in society there are a lot of girls that worry a lot because of how they look. They think that they have to be perfect for someone to like them. This song could help many girls get confidence.
4. "Take a bow" by Rihanna
I like this song because I like the story behind the song. I mean there are so many girls that get cheated on and they stay with their boyfriends. Girls should listen to this song and learn how to move on.
5. "If I were a boy" by Beyonce
The lyrics to this song are really strong. I feel that if a guy that cheats on his wife listens to this song he could change or at least regret what he has done to her.
6. "California Girls" by Kary Perry
This song is like a summer song. It is fresh and it talks about people in California.

My best friend loves Drake. I really never paid much attention to him until I heard the this particular song. This song got my attention because it talks about how a guy really liked the girl he was with.

I love this song I thought it was really interesting how someone from the 50's originally sang it. This is a different version. Part of it is in Spanish.
10. "I wished you loved me" by Tynisha Keli
I like this song because I think this story is true for a lot of us. A lot of the times 2 friends are with partners and they both see what they go through. They are always there supporting each other and at the end, they end together.

Angela's Study Tip # 2
A second tip on how to succeed in college is to attend all of your classes. It is important because when you go to class you get all the important information from your teachers. It's useful for tests because even if you don't take notes during the lessons you could still remember points the teacher made. You are still in the classroom listening to what the teacher is saying.
My Music History
In my opinion I think that the type of music I listen to has changed all throughout my life. When I was five I remember listening to music my parents would listen to. I don't have any older brothers or sisters therefore I didn't have anyone that listened to music around me other then my parents. I was little so I can't exacly remember the artist or the name of the songs. I do remember dancing to some of their songs. I would just run around in circles. When I was ten I remember listening to a Mexican pop band. They were really famous in latin America and even in the United States and other countries. The name of the band was RBD. They would sing love songs. I think the reason why they were so popular was because they had a show on T.V. When I was 15, I remember listening to Chris Brown. I was in love with the song "Say Goodbye". I remember singing this song everyday with my sister in our room. As you could see my music taste has changed a lot. I feel that up until 10 years old I was more influenced by my parents. What I mean is that I would listen to their music. As I grew up I started listening to other types of music. I still like spanish music but now I feel that I listen to a little of everything. I love music and enjoy listening to new songs.

"All Shook Up" Chapter #2
I found this chapter really interesting. Like I mention it on the previous summary segregation was a real problem during the 50's. One event that really caught my attention was how Rosa Parks was not afraid to refuse to give her sit to a white passenger on a bus. As a result she got arrested. Even though I have learned about Martin Luther King Jr in the past I really never paid much attention to it. Now that I read about him on this book I admire him. He is a role model to follow. I mean just his whole idea of working and fighting until getting justice is inspiring to people. People stopped using transportation and would walk, hitchhike etc. to get to places. A year later laws were passed that allowed segregation to stop on public transportation. I think that since a lot of colored people would use this service when they stopped the company got affected. Even though they did not like colored people they still wanted their money.
There were some other events that really caught my eye. For example, black children were not allowed in white schools. Furthermore white students had more job opportunities than the blacks. The black students had faith and wanted to study. They were hoping for things to get better after obtaining their degree. Segregation was mostly on the south. While reading all this I got mad and sad at the same time. I mean why weren't the black people superior? is it because of the color?. In my opinion whites and colored people are capable of doing the same thing. We are all human.

GOOGLE THIS.. ANGELA LOPEZ =]
I found it very difficult to find myself on Google. There are a lot of people who have my name as well. If someone who doesn't know how I look like is trying to find me on a particular page on Google that would give them a hard time. While trying to find myself on Google I noticed that the girls who appeared the most were the ones that have other types of pages. For example, those who have public pictures for everyone to look at. The first and only thing I saw that related to me was my facebook. Since my profile is private all I was able to see was my default picture. In my opinion an employer would get a good impression of me because my default is not wild. I'm not smoking, drinking, have any tattoos etc. I mean this is not bad but people today in society put people in certain groups based on their looks. Now that I looked at all those girls who have pages and are more known than me I don't regret not having one. Most of those girls would not give a good impression. I think one should be more private and only share information with people you know for one's own security. .

"All Shook Up" Chapter #1
As I was reading "All Shook Up" I thought it was interesting how white people liked black music but yet they would always discriminate against them. It is amazing how some stores would not even carry their music but yet white youth were willing to consume them. The markets did not care about the money; they had their pride before it. People from the white areas could have opened night clubs and made money but they chose not to. Instead white people would go to the black neighborhoods to go to the clubs. I think it is amazing how music little by little brought both the blacks and the whites together. Even in this era teenagers are more open minded than their parents. For example, teenagers see homosexuals as something normal when on the other hand we have the parents not accepting it as good.
"Between 1940 and 1960, three million blacks left the states of the Old Confederacy. The percentage of blacks living on farms dropped from 35 to 8; the percentage living in cities grew from 49 to 73. Most of the migrants were young" (11). This proves to me that even if discrimination was happening during this time the youth were more open minded and wanted to succeed. This is why they left to the cities looking for a better life. This actually worked. A lot of black radio stations were opened, giving the blacks an opportunity.
By the mid-50s, 21 radio stations were all black.

Angelas TIP #1
In my opinion I think a good tip on how to succeed in college is to take good notes during class. Taking notes is a good strategy because one could always go back and study those notes for the tests or for any other need. I have learned that while taking notes one tends to pay extra attention during the lessons and ask questions if needed.
